Ryder bolsters mobile maintenance business with recruitment drive and creates local employment opportunities in Lichfield

Lichfield, UK, 8 July 2020- Ryder, a leading independent provider of commercial vehicle contract hire, rental, and maintenance services across the UK, is expanding its Lichfield, Staffordshire operations and creating new local employment opportunities within its Mobile Maintenance Services business.

A key component of the Ryder network of 20,000 leased and rental trucks, trailers and vans, Ryder Lichfield is the control hub for the company’s Mobile Maintenance Services Technicians who are deployed across the country to repair and maintain customers’ fleets. Lichfield is also home to a central trailer repair workshop and is an Authorised Testing Facility (ATF) approved by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

The Mobile Maintenance Team totals over 120 employees of which around 70 employees are based at the Lichfield site, the company is now recruiting for nine new roles, all with a technical aspect.

The key vacancies are for Maintenance Controllers; these are technical, office-based roles that either support and oversee the deployment of Ryder’s team of Mobile Maintenance Technicians or work with Ryder’s vendor and dealer network.

Two tiers of Controller roles are available – T2 and T3 - with the higher T3 Controllers requiring a formal qualification in engineering, such as a City & Guilds, while applicants for the T2 Controller role may have experience from on-the-job training or gained transferrable skills in a similar industry.

“We are looking for technically-minded people who have an understanding of approving, authorising and validating the type of work that is deployed to our Technicians or network,” says Stuart Porter, Customer Operations Manager, Ryder Mobile Maintenance Services. “Our Mobile Maintenance Controllers effectively assign jobs to our Mobile Technicians, and approve the work that the Technicians advise needs to be undertaken, whilst external Mobile Maintenance Controllers work with our vendor and dealer network again to approve the work that is identified.”

Two additional vacancies also exist within the Compliance & Planning team, with a remit for ensuring that any vehicles Ryder puts on the road are safe, legal and compliant.

The Lichfield site was originally the home of Bullwell Trailer Solutions which was an owner-led business acquired by Ryder in 2014. Over the last 6 years significant change has moved the team into the larger more corporate world of Ryder with a number of new appointments to key management roles. This has also included the implementation of some key initiatives such as an Annual Awards Ceremony and a Ryder Values Thank You Platform which recognises the team for their hard work, and ensures that their achievements are acknowledged and rewarded.

As a long-standing member of the business community in Lichfield, Ryder is also a supporter of the local Lichfield community Food Bank and several other initiatives.
